Winter in the woods,
ritual meditation,
cobweb sticks catch
sloppy snowflakes,
Barred owls
incubate shapely eggs,
and a ruffed grouse
roosts in an evergreen;
his feathered nostrils
fanning away the chill.
Winter in the woods,
dawn is dormant,
short days refuse to rise,
branch-breaking winds
blow the day’s first whistle,
as songbirds congregate
to control their shivering.
Below, grubs secrete
sugary antifreeze,
crunchy desserts
for daring woodpeckers
seeking energy
to survive the long stillness.
Winter in the woods
for you I would survive
another season
full of this year’s
I told you so’s
and wish I coulds.

Lyrics:
Save me from noise and silence
Sálvame del ruido y del silencio
That I have nothing left if you leave
Que no me queda nada si te vas
I know that being with me is never easy
Yo sé que estar conmigo nunca es fácil
That my voice is the collapse of your sea
Que mi voz es el derrumbe de tu mar
And understand, please, I ask you
Y entiende, por favor, yo te lo pido
That without your hands, this body is unnecessary
Que sin tus manos, este cuerpo está de más
so come back
Así que vuelve
When you want, come back
Cuando tú quieras, vuelve
that I this war
Que yo esta guerra
I already lost her
Ya la perdí
And if it is necessary
Y si es preciso
I give you the moon and come back
Te doy la luna y vuelve
So you understand
Para que entiendas
What am I of you?
Que soy de ti
so come back
Así que vuelve
When you want, come back
Cuando tú quieras, vuelve
that I this war
Que yo esta guerra
I already lost her
Ya la perdí
And if it is necessary
Y si es preciso
I give you the moon and come back
Te doy la luna y vuelve
So you understand
Para que entiendas
What am I of you?
Que soy de ti
So you understand
Para que entiendas
What am I of you?
Que soy de ti
a delightful little confection; a vignette of visceral verve; with a wistful ending; the ‘crunch desserts ‘ stanza is so good 🙂

Thank you, John. Winter arrives and we’ve already survived a flu and the holiday shortages.
