I penned this poem at the base of Niagara’s Horseshoe Falls as I clumsily tried to capture the magic of what I was viewing. My hope is that a bit of the power of this place found its way into my verse. Enjoy!

Resurgence

Slow motion
transformation,
green to white,
a miracle before our eyes.
Same as when I feel for you,
     a thousand shooting stars,
     a million falling moon beams,
that voice –
     whispering.

The ephemeral feeling
this could be a dream
I’m executing.

Shy light beams
billow,
a smoke screen,
a waterfall eroding,
strong,
nonstop,
concealing.

White curls of wisdom
     cascade in
     frothy steam
swirl
churn
and perhaps with
gracious luck
      return
      reincarnated by clouds
to fall a second time.

    1. Thank you, Simone. This is so kind of you to say. I could have stayed there all day to take it in, really, but the kids were patient enough to let me write a bit.

  3. The waterfall does erode the rocks. Thousands of years ago, the falls were further downstream. Imagine, that all the water in the Great Lakes system will eventually pass over these falls. I’ve never been there…

    1. Water is powerful stuff. I read the diagrams about the erosion and to be there next to that volume of falling water. I was moved. If you have a chance to see it, I’d recommend a visit.

      1. I would love too! My folks visited the falls as part of their honeymoon long ago. Isn’t geology so fascinating and beautiful!!

      2. It was a bit like the first time I discovered stars were planets. Very moving to be near the falls. The rapids were also out of this world.

    1. I’m so glad you enjoyed this poem, Jeff. Some of my writes are driven by the head and others by the head and the heart. For me, this was all heart with no logic intruding. It feels very vulnerable to write this way, as I’m sure you know. 💜

      1. Ah, I love the distinction you create between the head and the heart; I do know about this, and it is vulnerable. It’s a lovely space, and one that yields splendid poetry, even if we choose to keep it to ourselves sometimes. You’re welcome, K. Always. 💜
