Virginia Nightingale
braided ponytail
new to the full cycle
of bloody seasons,
her mysteries molting
with the Shenandoah’s sway,
featherless, she glides away.
Call her a beginner,
a cardinal sinner,
blindfolded to the winter
her strong beak slices
feeds the crimson within;
she may well be
Virginia’s last virgin.
First beak at the birdhouse
her suitors aroused
pass pods cheek to cheek while
the bright bird dreams of leaving,
a cardinal offense
for a rusty rig designed to
be a nest of twigs.
The branches of her shoulders
stoop, a sign she’s grown older.
First flakes fall like footsteps,
suitors swoop past,
“Cheer! Cheer! Cheer!”
We’ll wait it out another year
in monogamy, but this redbird
knows a songbook of tunes;
she only shares them on full moons.

Thank you. I enjoyed learning a bit about cardinals to craft this piece, but of course as a born Virginian there is a lot of my heart in it as well.
