It was the last time they’d touch–
back to back, the earth and sky,
each one waiting
for the other’s pacing,
a chance to draw and die.
Sunset invades their characters,
endings and beginnings in a single step.
Their fanciful parting may mean nothing–
another duet dissolved into duel.
Standoffs often lack climax;
is it leaving or staying that makes us fools?

what an amazing picture and poem: capable of multiple interpretations: made me think of ‘Rocket Man’ and ‘High Noon’ –a strange conjunction, and that tantalizing last stanza; what a trip 🙂

Thank you very much, John. Maybe too many westerns growing up but so many sunsets lately seem like showdowns, just seemed the right time to post. Not to mention it’s so hot here, feels like there should be tumbleweeds rolling past me most days.

Thanks, Worms. The sunset and I can hear the music of a showdown. Maybe tomorrow there won’t be another draw?

A western showdown? A breakup that’s the final sunset?

Sunset invades their characters,
endings and beginnings in a single step.
This is both enchanting with hint of pain, K.
