Everyone knows the sacrifice and carnage of D-Day, but what about the victims of a lesser known V-Day?
Every Wednesday I’ve been reading some lively discussions stemming from Fandango’s Provocative Question. As the infamous V-Day approaches, Fandango asks:
How do you feel about Valentine’s Day? Do you consider it to be a special day, one where you express your deep love and appreciation for your significant other? Or is it just a commercialized “Hallmark Holiday” where you feel pressured to spend money on cards, flowers, candy, jewelry, and/or expensive dinners in order to stay on the good side of the one you love? Either way, what, if anything, are your plans for Valentine’s Day this year?
The villian, Valentine’s Day, will arrive soon, a carnage of red roses with bleach packets trailing in his wake. Boxes of chocolates from the local gas station bulging guts, and the infamous evil teddy bears that, of course, every woman wants to feel snuggled in the night.
Don’t forget the hundreds of over-priced heart-shaped jewelry items that will be purchased and packaged as desperate attempts at romance. If only someone would tell these lost souls, “No sir, she doesn’t want a heart-shaped brooch to commemorate the holiday.”
Nor does anyone need a miniature bouncy balloon from the check-out stand that is at best used by children recreating Punch and Judy shows.
Just consider the countless strawberries that lay down their lives for the occasion. And, it’s the off-season! Incomprehensible violence against a seasonal delight.
Let’s just face it. V-Day is a massacre of emotions for the single, and a turret gun of forced feelings for many in relationships. A greeting card gallows, if you will. We’ll all be lucky to get out without conversation candy trauma or hurt feelings.
I propose, instead, we transform the day to a day of general kindness. Call it K-Day (not narcissistic at all). No truly, we don’t need robo-romance and commercial carnage. A general sense of caring and love would reverse the curse of Valentine’s Day and make it again a day of celebration for all.
To set the tone for this revised holiday, I’m sharing Harry Styles mantra song, “Treat People With Kindness.”
I like your idea much better than the commercial rip-off that Valentine’s Day has become…
